I am a self taught, American-born artisan who has been making hats for just over 20 years. My hats are one of a kind wearable artworks handcrafted from reclaimed textiles and found objects. I am inspired by mostly non-textile based art forms (including manuscripts and architecture) from several global cultures and time periods. Currently those influences are based on the painted borders of medieval Russian and Persian manuscripts...
The photo is from Chinese New Year 2011 in Disneyland. Proof positive that on occassion, I put my work down and have some fun!
August Phoenix, the immortal bird symbolized in several cultures, which is reborn from its own ashes, is a reference to the recycle nature of my hats. I prefer to work with furs, leathers, wools and other textiles that I glean from vintage coats and local thrift store finds. Working with reclaimed textiles assures that each of my hats is a distinctive, durable, wearable artwork.
