Hello! My name is Laura. I've been working or studying in the craft world since about 1996. While I've been primarily trained as a potter, I have also been a knitter for several years, and after the birth of my third child I began dyeing and spinning. These days I keep my foot in both doors, and most recently I have been making ceramic buttons which combine quite nicely with the rustic feel of my handspun yarn.
I have also dabbled in other craft media and techniques, including soap making, paper craft, and weaving. These days I'm feeling an urge to explore weaving a little more, along with sewing.
My clay work is what I have been best known for. My work in that regard includes both wheel thrown tableware and handbuilt sculpture. I have participated in group and two-person exhibitions, creating free standing or wall mounted "soul houses," which explore the ideas of comfort, solace, safety, and home.
In terms of my fibre work, I will generally buy raw fleeces and process them at home. I love the idea of creating something entirely from my own hands. I dye the fleece prior to spinning, and mix it with other fibres such as soy silk, silk noil and mohair. I like to create a lot of texture and depth in the yarn, requiring a simple stockinette stitch to bring out its beauty.
I have recently committed myself to creating full time (or as much full time as I can manage!). I teach pottery classes on an ongoing basis, but feel ready now to delve more deeply into making my own work once again.
I live with my husband and three kids (9 year old twin boys and a 3 year old daughter) in Quebec Canada.
