Product Description

Dimensions:

13.5" x 12.5" (without tassels)
Metric: 34 x 31 cm

Estimated age: 1950's

Specifics on this piece: Most of the pieces I have seen like this are attributed to the Uzbeks, but the Turkmen also make similar work. This style of patchwork is referred to as "Yuruk Yastik" by some. In the west, the triangles are commonly known as flying geese. This small textile is meant to hang on the wall. The tassels are silk and could probably be fluffed up with a needle. The piece is in good shape, although the backing has come loose and needs to be re-attached. This is a good sampler for textile and quilt enthusiasts who like to refer to patchwork styles from around the world. All of the stitching has been done by hand.

Afghanistan has been at the heart of the crossroads for the Silk Road for centuries. Nomads and generations of ethnic groups have thrived on trade and beautiful handicraft skills. Textiles, embroidery and carpet weaving continue to represent a plethora of skills that extend on into metal work, wood work, and ceramics. Designs reflect both the beauty of nature and life of spirit in choice of colors and fluidity of the design.
