This gorgeous vintage tie-dyed geometric African Kuba cloth pillow is backed in a coordinating tan linen. Small needle holes are sometimes visible from an original hand-sewn seam and close inspection often reveals hand-sewn seams and other subtle marks from its past life.
Kuba cloth is handwoven from raffia by the Kuba people of Congo, West Africa (formerly Zaire). In traditional wear, lengths of kuba cloth are gathered into a full skirt.
In the 1900’s, demand for the cloth by Western collectors led to commercial production for the tourist industry. However, due to the unrest in this part of the world, most of the Kuba hitting the markets these days is vintage, from the 1970’s or earlier. These pillows are made from Kuba estimated at 50 years +.
