"The Dream Lives On" by Judy Warner, Fiber Art. Art Quilt celebrating three Kennedy brothers. Many of Judy's quilts have social justice messages. This one was made when Ted Kennedy passed away in 2009: judywarner.com/the-dream-lives-on/

"Appliqué art quilt using embellishment and decorative stitching on cotton fabric.

When Ted Kennedy died in August 2009, it marked the passing of the last of the three brothers, John, Bob, and Ted, whose lives had shaped my own. As I watched and listened to the eulogies following Ted’s passing, the image for this piece flashed in my mind.

The tears shed with the loss of these three men collect in a pond and from its depth rises the mythological phoenix carrying forth with their dreams for social justice for all." 31″ x 26″

"Never Stand Alone" by Rose Hughes - Quilt Artist
artizanmade.com/portfolios/rose-hughes-quilt-artist/

Available for purchase on Rose's website!
Details:
Date: 2004
Size: 47”w x 46”h
Materials: Commercial and hand-dyed silks and commercial cottons, wool yarns and glass beads, cotton/polyester batting, cotton backing, cotton embroidery, and metallic threads
Signed on front of quilt
Price: $2200.00

Design Inspiration & Process:
The California live oaks are wild and funky shaped trees that grow throughout the state. They are different from other oaks, and their trunks can take on a life of their own from the winds flowing through the hill.

This quilt incorporated improvisational piecing and other ways of creating fabric embellishments that continue to be used in my work.

The quilt top was constructed using my Fast-Piece Applique™ method, and was first couched, then machine quilted, then hand stitched and lastly beaded before I finished off the piece using a traditional binding.

Exhibitions:
Backroads Journey (solo exhibit) – Island Quilter Gallery, Vashon Washington

Golden Aspens Leaf Bracelet by Eileen Flanagan Doughty
artizanmade.com/product/golden-aspens-leaf-bracelet/

"A variety of metallic threads, stitched on my domestic sewing machine, create shimmering aspen leaves to wear around your wrist.

The leaves are stitched in a lacy manner, but are quite sturdy. If you happen to get them wet, just lay the bracelet flat while drying to maintain its form.

A gold-metal magnetic closure is hidden underneath the leaves, making it easy to take the bracelet on or off. The bracelet measures 7.5 x 1.25 inches (flat)." $50

Craft in America

The second exhibition in our series of Mano-Made: New Expression in Craft exhibitions part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA.

Monterrubio’s work is influenced by murals, prison tattoos, graffiti art and old etchings. His complex narratives explore the dark corners of the Mexican immigrant experience and LA’s tough contemporary culture. Monterrubio is a master storyteller and illustrator who gives new relevance to the ancient tradition of the decorated ceramic vessel. Melding stylistic elements of Mexican mural painting with his artistic origins as a graffiti artist, Gerardo breathes new life to clay forms.

Monterrubio was born in Oaxaca, Mexico. After obtaining a BFA in Ceramic Arts from California State University, Long Beach, he received his MFA from UCLA and currently teaches at Long Beach City College. His work is in the American Museum of Ceramic Art (Pomona, CA) and a few select private collections.

This exhibition is part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA.

Khadi & Co is a collection by Danish designer Bess Nielsen inspired by Mahatma Gandi's Swadeshi, a movement promoting Indian goods he started in 1918. When she founded Khadi and Co in 2004, Nielsen wished to convey the true spirit of khadi, and promote the remarkable skills of Indian weavers. Khadi & Co products are made with Indian textile techniques such as block printing, ikat weaving and tie dye, but the simple, modern style comes from her Scandinavian background. With silks, wools and cottons, Bess has produced a selection of homeware, clothing and accessories that blend her Nordic heritage with her passion for India. Afghan Tribal Arts

Inanna dazzles us with a belly dance performance on Wednesday evening!

Take a break and get energized by a whirl of color, elegance and splendor! 6:30-7pm at Beads & Rugs By ATA, 626 Broadway, downtown Paducah.

Inanna is a member of Zerdali Dance Co., founder of Bella Luna Belly Dance and co-founder of Akasha Dance Co. She is also an independent distributor of It Works! She has studied belly dance since 2004. After life time search for the perfect form of self-expression she found it in the earthy and sensual movements of Middle Eastern dance. She was transfixed by these beautiful, natural women and their colorful costumes that made music by just walking! She started her journey through the world of hips and bellies with an inexpensive hip scarf and a DVD. When she found Ligaya and the Zerdali Dancers of Paducah she found a group of wonderful women who continue to inspire and encourage her every day.

Her love of the art form has led her to travel the country, gleaning from her teachers the knowledge they possess and performing with dancers from around the world. As she continues to learn and grow, so does her love of belly dance.
