I am an Artist and Creative Practitioner based in beautiful Cumbria, UK. I specialise in drawing and textiles, in particular hand and machine embroidery. I am fascinated by the natural world and our connection to it and I’m particularly interested in birds (and their feathers!) One of the things that really intrigues me about birds is their ability to fly and so escape the ground. I am also intrigued by dichotomies; presence and absence, light and dark, good and evil. I want to create work that is beautiful but that also draws people in for a closer look and causes viewers to perhaps reconsider and look at things in a different way.
I choose to work predominantly with natural fibres such as cotton, wool and silk and find myself drawn to traditional textile techniques such as embroidery, knitting and natural dyeing. I enjoy the connection with the, often forgotten, makers of the past that working with these techniques gives me as well as the challenge of making them relevant in our modern world. Working with these techniques is time consuming, giving me the chance to slow down and really think about the work I am creating.
One of the reasons I choose to work with textiles is because of their tactile qualities and also for the connection that we all have with them. Textiles permeate all areas of our lives and I want to use this familiarity to draw people into my work.
I love sharing my work, knowledge and experience through exhibitions, workshops and talks. I am an experienced workshop leader and I work on a variety of community and education based arts projects with a diverse range of people in a variety of settings. I love sharing my passion for the arts and helping people to grow both artistically and personally.
