Clairan Ferrono of Fabric8tions

Although I have done needlework my entire life, all my formal education has been in language and literature. I spent nearly 25 years teaching English and writing. Now that I work in the visual arts, I see my work as poetry: utilizing visual rhythm, rhyme, metaphor, and repetition to create layers of meaning, not all of which is accessible at first glance. I want to reward the careful observer. I want the viewer to come back for more.

I am a mixed media artist living in Chicago. I create fiber collages and drawings by piecing, fusing, stitching and quilting both commercial fabrics and fabrics I have dyed, painted, or printed. My work has been extensively shown throughout the Midwest, and both nationally and internationally. In 2004 I was awarded an exhibition grant by the Illinois chapter of the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Three of my pieces hung in the American Embassy in Côte d’Ivoire from 20007-2010. And my work has been in invitational exhibits in Germany, Switzerland, Australia and Taiwan. I am a Professional Artist member of Studio Art Quilt Associates for whom I am interviewing art quilters and the founding member of FAC (Fiber Artists Coalition) an exhibiting group.
