Jacqueline K Calladine – Kirkland, Washington, USA

I am an artist placemaker. I create site-specific and place inspired installations through the creation of boutique textiles using traditional artisan techniques such as natural dyeing, embroidery and weaving. For as long as I can remember, I have taken pieces of discarded cloth and stitched them together to make new, precious artefacts that reflect both my internal and external landscape. My work is often achingly personal, revealing the fragile relationships and connections with people and place. Having moved to the US from England three years ago, much of my practice is dominated by my search to find “home” in this new land, to find real connection with a culture that isn’t my own. This is what drives my investigation into local colour, materials and resources and my urge to create “place” in a space that still feels alien to me.

I am a passionate community artist and have worked in community development through the arts for over 15 years. I have worked with all ages from 3 to 93 and love creating large projects that inspire friendship and connection. Sharing my skills, advocating for the arts and mentoring other artists are all key to my practice. So, as well as creating my own artwork, I also lead a local nonprofit arts organization, VALA Eastside, which supports and advocates for local artists.

Creating place through public art projects is my primary service. I have designed, led and curated several large projects in collaboration with local government and public organisations. I am looking for opportunities worldwide to develop this service, either through residencies, community arts projects or temporary art installations. I also offer consultancy services for artists and designers who wish to work within an ethical, sustainable or more eco friendly framework. I welcome all enquiries via email and would love you to join my creative circle, which can be found on my website.
